First in the "Balloon" series.
To begin this piece, a hole was cut in the canvas, where an inflated balloon was placed, partially protruding from the back of the canvas. Papier mâché was added over the balloon, securing it to the canvas. The petals were created by shaping wire mesh into forms and attaching them to the dried papier-mâché balloon with glue. Working with papier mâché was new for the artist, and adding 3D facial details was a gamble that paid off. She chose to cover the petals with fabric scraps saved from pillowcases, t-shirts, and various projects.
